- Coverage Dates: 1830-1880
This collection contains the complete run of the Godey's Lady's Book magazine and is a resource portraying 19th century American life and culture. Started in 1830, it entertained, informed, and educated the growing audience of American women. It first included fashion descriptions and plates, biography sketches, sheet music, and articles about mineralogy, handcrafts, female costume, dance, equestrienne procedures, health and hygiene, recipes, and remedies. Later, it became a literary magazine containing book reviews and works from celebrated 19th century authors and frequently discussed the notion of "women's sphere."
