- Human Relations Area Files (eHRAF): World Cultures is a Web-based, full-text database of ethnographic studies for cultures throughout the world. The mores, cultural, religious, and political customs of each tribe or community is documented by field anthropologists. The database contains ethnographic and other documents describing cultural and social life (books, journal articles, and dissertations) that are compiled into culture files. While the vast majority of the HRAF is on microfiche, material added since 1991 is only available electronically.
eHRAF contains two classification systems: 1) Outline of World Cultures (OWC for short) classifies cultures and 2) Outline of Cultural Materials (OCM for short) provides a subject index for all aspects of cultural and social life.
Search Aids: Once in the database, use the Outline of World Cultures and the Outline of Cultural Materials to find the exact vocabulary for culture names and subject codes. Help is available.
Access: On campus and remote.
Database provider: Human Relations Area Files, Inc.
